When Michael Cimino moved to L.A. two years ago, he spent his nights working as the mechanical-bull operator at a West Hollywood steak house. Now the actor is turning heads as the main character in Hulu’s LGBTQ drama Love, Victor, which debuted June 17. The show, a spin-off of the 2018 film Love, Simon, follows teen Victor Salazar as he struggles with his sexuality in a conservative Latin household. While Cimino, who is of Puerto Rican and Italian German descent, has been lauded for his performance, he’s quick to say “I still feel like I’m just a kid from Vegas.”

As for Michael, he took finding his voice literally, through his passion for singing. “I always wanted to be a singer… ever since I was a little kid,” he told VMAN. A member of his church knew this and one day asked the aspiring singer to join his acting class. Cimino agreed. Having several role models to look up to, Michael credits one, in particular, his older cousin Jon-Jon, who serves more as a brotherly figure. Michael describes him as a charismatic, funny, and outgoing gay man. Reminiscing, he says, “I just remember wanting and trying to be like him, trying to be a person that maybe has an impact on people.” He shares with honesty, “Jon-Jon is a huge reason why I am the person I am today;” crediting his cousin who welcomed conversations and shared personal experiences that helped to build the character of Victor.

Remember to watch Love, Victor when it premieres on Hulu on June 17th, 2020!

Get ready to fall in love with high schooler Victor Salazar, who’s on a journey to self-discovery in the new Hulu series Love, Victor.

The 10-episode spinoff of the 2018 big-screen romance Love, Simon follows Michael Cimino’s character as he struggles with his sexuality while adapting to a new city (Atlanta) and a new school. “Most of the time [a move like that] makes [figuring out these questions] a lot harder, because trying to navigate this new world is hard,” Cimono says.

The fact that there are no preconceived notions about this Texas transplant should work in Victor’s favor. But when Victor starts dating a classmate named Mia (Rachel Naomi Hilson), Cimino says, “Victor makes there be preconceived notions about him. He’s on his way to a very tough first few months at school.”
